Saturday night Hershey Bears fans will get a chance to support an important cause, close to the heart of Tyson Strachan. The Bears defenseman and his girlfriend Kate Ankoviak, have formed “Strachan Strays,” to help raise awareness of the pet overpopulation and dog homelessness.
“Kate and I are both dog lovers. We have a couple rescue dogs of our own. We had one of our dogs that passed away, that we were fostering at the time. He came from a puppy mill and and passed away quickly. We saw a lot of the conditions that the dogs were being bred in. We’ve spent a lot of time in shelters and volunteering. Just along the way, we’ve realized just how big of an issue pet over population has become.”
Strachan Strays will have a booth and displays set up on the Giant Center concourse on Saturday, during the Bears game against the Penguins. They will be selling t-shirts and other related items.
Kate helped to arrange a recent photoshoot with Bears players and homeless dogs helping to promote the cause.
“To use the hockey platform to get the word out ,is something so simple but certainly that’s something that’s needed,” said Kate.
“It’s amazing to already see the support we’ve received from the Hershey fans. These rescue dogs need it. We just have to spread the word and the fans are are very willing to do that.”
“Anyone who has ever rescued a dog knows how good that feeling is,” added Strachan. “You feel like you’ve really stepped in and saved an animal’s life. I think everyday we get to relive that through other peoples stories.”
